5 Reasons kids love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Everyone wants their child to be active and healthy, and in a society which is surrounded by screens and obesity numbers going through the roof, it’s more important now than ever.

Although we just want our kids to be active, not all activities are equal and beneficial and its important to choose something that will bring great rewards and that your child likes.  If they don’t like it, they won’t stick to it, regardless if you are dragging them through the door.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ( BJJ ) is rich with benefits for kids young and old.  There are so many, here are 5 of the most popular.

  1. BJJ is a gentle art

The foundations of BJJ are based on a cool head and fluid calculated movements.  It’s not a fighting art, even though the skills learnt through BJJ can be applied directly as self defence.  BJJ builds confidence through application of movement and training within a community.  It brings awareness to the body and develops coordination.

  2. BJJ is for everyone

Children can start as young as 5 years old at Brazilarte Academy, Southend on Sea, Essex.  Regardless of age, gender and ability.  BJJ enhances strengths and challenges weaknesses. It embraces many ideals and is open to interpretation, meaning that children can learn, progress and discover their own way through practice.

  3. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches focus, discipline, respect and dedication

BJJ dons its cap to eastern martial arts teaching participants to not only respect themselves but their friends training with them.  To progress in BJJ children will expected to attend regularly so that techniques and practices can be remembered.  Rolling in BJJ is like a conversation, if you are not paying attention it is easy to miss what is being said.  Children are taught to pay attention to th details for their advantage.  If they are training regularly it is possible to progress through the belt system with confidence as a reward to their dedication.

  4. Positive environment

It is important that children feel comfortable and safe in their environment.  With this comes confidence and in turn faster learning.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu presents problems which need solutions.  There are many possibilities and our teachers encourage our students to explore and test the solutions.  Students are coached to work with their fellow students to solve these problems regardless of if they are on the attack or defence.  It creates a competitive and positive environment for the children to learn in.

  5. BJJ is FUN

We wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t.  BJJ presents a place where we can learn about healthy choices, make new friends and discover a new hobby.  Children are encourage to play and discover through the many BJJ movements, whilst meeting new people and forging new friendships.  The emphasis is on play and though structured play we have a lot of fun.
